Didi and BAIC partner on electric-car sharing service

Didi Chuxing and BAIC Group have entered into a strategic partnership in the field of new-energy-vehicle sharing services, according to some media reports. The companies will be forming a joint venture known as BAIC-Xiaoju New Energy Auto Technology. The JV will work to develop next-generation connected-car systems through new energy vehicle and artificial intelligence projects.

It is known that Didi Chuxing Technology is a Chinese ride-sharing, artificial intelligence and autonomous technology conglomerate, and BAIC Group is a Chinese state-owned automaker. China has been pushing new-energy vehicles to cut oil imports and improve air quality. The country aims to become a technological leader in the automobile sector. China has made some structural changes for the purpose. The state-owned BAIC is also working to stop selling gas-driven car models by 2025.

Didi is also making efforts for bringing electric vehicles in its fleet. The company has been developing its electric charging network and has taken number of initiatives to promote electric vehicles. For example the company has signed an agreement with Continental to cooperate in developing internet-connected, electric cars tailor-made for Didi’s ride-hailing services. DiDi has also formed auto alliance that will launch 12 pure electric models worldwide, utilizing common EV platforms and components. DiDi is also partnering with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Allianz for a new electric vehicle car-sharing program in China.
