BMW is working on automatic gear transmission called “Foresight” which downshifts before the car enters corners or encounters hills. Foresight gathers road information from a number of sources including the navigation system, a cellular data connection, and cameras and radars installed in the car. It is currently under development and would take three to five years to hit the market.
In addition to calling for earlier downshifts, Foresight will also instruct the transmission to hold a lower gear longer if it knows that there are multiple curves in close succession.
