USA: Volkswagen has announced that the iBeetle —first model line from Volkswagen will be launched with a built-in iPhone docking station and connected iOS app. The Apple smartphone component will be available at the beginning of next year, in the standard coupe model, as well as the convertible.
Built into the center of the car’s dashboard, the docking station allows the driver to simply snap in their iPhone, immediately connecting it with the vehicle and allowing for functions like navigation, hands-free phone calls, and music.
iBeetle drivers will be able to connect their iOS device to a special Beetle app, via the docking station or wirelessly, providing access to various services, including Spotify and iTunes.
The app offers features like: Expert, which turns the smartphone into an extended on-board mechanical instrument (G-Meter, oil and coolant temperature gauges, a chronometer, a compass); Trainer, which provides comparative data on driving times, distances, and fuel economy values; Reader, which lists social network messages and texts; Postcard, which can send the driver’s current location to friends as a digital postcard; Photo, which sends photos taken inside car to social networks; and Milestones, which is available when the smartphone is undocked, and rewards users with virtual “milestone stickers” when certain tasks are completed.
Volkswagen has stated that the iBeetle is one of the first cars in the world to incorporate a genuine integrative interface that’s been coordinated with Apple.
The announcement did not specify which dock the new car will include – Lightning or 30-pin. A Volkswagen spokeswoman stated, “We are in still finalizing how the system will be configured for the U.S. Market. While it may include docking for both plug generations as well as in-car Wi-Fi in addition to app mobile based connectivity, these features are not yet confirmed. The application is limited to the Apple platform however.”
