India to implement 13 digit numbering scheme for M2M SIMs

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a directive instructing all telecom operators in the country to start issuing 13-digit mobile numbers to M2M customers.

In the directive it is mentioned that 13 digit numbering scheme will be implemented from 1st July 2018 and from this date onwards, all new M2M mobile connections will be allocated 13-digit number only. The DoT has asked all the TSPs to ensure that their network elements, including IT and other relevant systems, are aligned with 13-digit numbering for M2M SIM’s before 1st July 2018.

The existing 10-digit M2M numbers will have to be migrated to 13-digits, the process for which will start from 1st October 2018 and will continue till 31st December 2018.

Machine to machine (M2M) is any technology that enables exchange information among networked devices. M2M communication is the basis of technology Internet of Things and generally finds application in the field of remote monitoring. remote control, robotics, traffic control, logistic services, supply chain management, fleet management etc.

Connected Vehicle, Vehicle Tracking, Remote Diagnostics/Preventive Maintenance would be some of the segments which would benefit from this.
