Didi Chuxing has signed an agreement with Continental AG to cooperate in developing internet-connected, electric cars tailor-made for Didi’s ride-hailing services, Reuters has reported.
The Chinese ride-hailing firm aims to develop dedicated “purpose-built” vehicles for congested cities like Beijing and Shanghai. The company wants to build a fleet of connected, environment-friendly cars with more comfortable seats and luggage space, sources close to the company according to the report.
Didi has said in a statement “Based on Didi’s practical experience on mobility as well as Continental’s advanced products and technologies, the parties will explore cooperation mainly in the areas of intelligent & connected vehicles (ICV) and customized new energy vehicle” A vehicle adapted to Didi’s needs is expected to roll out by 2020.
The company has also formed an alliance known as DiDi Auto Alliance which is an intelligent ride-sharing alliance that aims to empower and redefine smart mobility. By promoting the new energy automotive industry with partners along the value chain, it aims to unite all members to transform the business model of the automotive industry and establish itself as the world’s largest full-capacity vehicle operator platform. Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi signed a memorandum of understanding with DiDi in February.
