Hyundai & Iveco partner for electric trucks in Europe

Hyundai Motor Company and Iveco Group, have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for electric heavy-duty truck solutions. This includes both battery electric trucks and fuel cell electric trucks, for European markets. Hyundai Motor and Ives Group partnership dates back to 2022, thereafter in September 2022, they unveiled the first IVECO eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. This was followed by the debut of the IVECO BUS E-WAY H2 in October 2023. Most recently, in February of this year, the two companies announced the signing of a supply agreement. The agreement is for an IVECO-badged all-electric light commercial vehicle for Europe, based on Hyundai’s eLCV platform.

Hyundai’s partnership with Iveco to develop electric trucks in Europe is significant for several reasons(assisted by Merlin):

  1. Complementary Strengths and Capabilities:
    • Hyundai brings its advanced electric and fuel cell technologies to the partnership, having established a strong position in the development of zero-emission vehicles, notably the Xcient Fuel Cell hydrogen truck.
    • Iveco contributes with its robust presence in the European commercial vehicle market, extensive network, and deep understanding of the sector’s needs and regulatory environment. This collaboration leverages the technological prowess of Hyundai and Iveco’s market presence in Europe.
  2. Accelerated Innovation and Product Development:
    • The partnership aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future by focusing on battery electric trucks (BET) and fuel cell electric trucks (FCET) solutions for the European market. This collaborative approach is expected to hasten innovations, shorten development cycles, and bring electric commercial vehicles to market more quickly.
  3. Strategic Market Expansion:
    • By partnering with Iveco, Hyundai can significantly enhance its footprint in Europe—a key market for electric vehicles (EVs)—where there is a strong push towards sustainability and stringent emissions regulations. This move aligns with Hyundai’s strategy to increase its market share in commercial electric mobility outside of its home market.
  4. Response to Regulatory Pressures and Environmental Goals:
    • Europe is at the forefront of implementing strict emissions regulations, aiming for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Collaborating allows both companies to better meet these regulatory demands and contribute to the broader global environmental goals of reducing carbon emissions, in line with EU regulations for expanding EV and hydrogen charging networks.
  5. Economies of Scale and Reduced Development Costs:
    • Through their partnership, both companies can share development costs and risks associated with new technologies. This economic rationale supports the viability of electric trucks by improving profitability margins through economies of scale and pooled resources for research and development (R&D) efforts.
  6. Expanded Product Offerings to Meet Diverse Customer Needs:
    • The collaboration has already led to the unveiling of notable innovations like the IVECO eDaily Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle and the IVECO BUS E-WAY H2. Additionally, a supply agreement for an Iveco-badged all-electric light commercial vehicle based on Hyundai’s eLCV platform was announced, showcasing the partnership’s ability to cater to a wide range of customer demands and applications within the commercial vehicle sector 4 7 .
  7. Strengthening Infrastructure Support:
    • With Denmark’s commitment to establish 25 new electric truck charging parks, strategically located within 60 kilometers of each other, it underscores the growing infrastructure support in Europe for electric vehicles. This development complements the Hyundai-Iveco partnership by enhancing the electric truck ecosystem, ensuring the necessary charging infrastructure is in place to support the adoption of electric commercial vehicles 6 13 .

This partnership between Hyundai and Iveco is a strategic move towards redefining the commercial vehicle landscape in Europe, aligning with the global shift towards electric mobility and the creation of a more sustainable future in transportation.
