Hyundai Mobis to test level 4 autonomous driving in Incheon

Date: April 16, 2024.Hyundai Mobis, an auto parts manufacturer under the Hyundai Motor Group, has announced plans to conduct test rides of Level 4 autonomous driving in Incheon, South Korea. This initiative is set to begin this month and aims to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. The testing will involve a dedicated team of engineers and researchers, as well as a variety of vehicles equipped with the latest technology.

Level 4 autonomy, as categorized by the Society of Automotive Engineers, requires the vehicle to perform the majority of driving tasks independently without human intervention. Hyundai Mobis has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Incheon Free Economic Zone. They aim to collaborate with Incheon Technopark to nurture startups contributing to smart mobility innovations.

The test-driving project expects approximately 20 startups, partner firms, research institutes, and universities to participate. The test vehicle will navigate a 60-kilometer course, covering urban areas in Songdo and Yeongjongdo. This will occur through the first half of next year. Moreover, this presents a unique opportunity to test autonomous driving technologies in an urban setting. This is a departure from the more common highway driving tests.

Hyundai Mobis will be utilizing high-performance processors and computing technology optimized for Level 4 autonomous driving. Hyundai Mobis anticipates that the data collected from these urban driving tests will be valuable in advancing their autonomous driving solutions.

The Incheon municipal government deserves credit for enabling the inner-city drive.city drive. Moreover, this highlights the significance of this test in the context of real-world urban driving conditions.
