IESA and CES reports project 123 million EVs in India by 2032

News, 8 May 2025

India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is on the cusp of major expansion, fueled by government policies and increased research and development, according to an IESA and CES report. The report anticipates that India will have 123 million EVs by 2032. Expanding the charging infrastructure from 76,000 locations in 2024 to 2.1 million by 2032 is necessary to sustain this expansion, which will strengthen the economy and assist India in reaching 30% EV penetration by 2030.

Government support, such as the FAME-II scheme, has driven a twelvefold increase in EV adoption, from 0.35 million in 2019 to 4.4 million in 2024. 93% of EVs on Indian roads in 2024 were electric two- and three-wheelers, with only 6% being electric four-wheelers. The rise in personal electric four-wheelers is a major factor in the growth of private and home charging solutions.

About 76,000 public and private EV charging stations with a combined installed capacity of 1.3 GW were present in India in 2024. High-power DC rapid charging is becoming more and more necessary, as seen by the fact that CCS2 chargers dominated the installed capacity while if AC-001 chargers accounted for almost half of all installed ports.
