Indian Oil to test Hyundai’s hydrogen vehicle in India

News, 23 April 2025
Indian Oil and Hyundai Motor India are collaborating to explore hydrogen-powered vehicles in India, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, which will focus on introducing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to the Indian market.
As part of their agreement, Hyundai has provided Indian Oil with a Hyundai NEXO hydrogen-powered SUV for testing purposes. The vehicle will undergo extensive real-world trials, covering 40,000 kilometers over two years, to assess its reliability, performance capabilities, and maintenance needs within the Indian context.
In order to determine the potential long-term affordability and efficiency of these hydrogen vehicles, the trial will also incorporate a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis. The businesses anticipate that the information will shed light on the advantages of hydrogen transportation for the economy and the environment. Hyundai and IndianOil hope to clear the way for cleaner, more sustainable transportation in India with this partnership.
Future strategies
Hyundai is setting up state-of-the-art Hydrogen Innovation Center in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). Startups and automakers will receive assistance from this center in testing their hydrogen-related components and technology. It is anticipated to serve as a center for green hydrogen innovation.
