Pony.ai debuts paid robotaxi service in Shenzhen

Date: February 01, 2024.Pony.ai has launched China’s paid unmanned Robotaxi service in Shenzhen’s Bao’an District, after receiving the commercial pilot license from the local authorities. The service covers several core areas of the city, including tourist attractions, business districts, airports, and an ocean-themed urban area. It is available to the public through the PonyPilot+ app.

Pony.ai has partnered with GAC Group’s ride-hailing platform OnTime to operate the service. The service will not require a human driver or safety officer on board. The software allows users to summon a Robotaxi for a safe, comfortable, and efficient travel experience. The service runs from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., including rush hour, and includes roughly 500 pick-up and drop-off locations.

The Robotaxi service will offer passengers a more convenient and efficient way to travel. This comes with the added convenience of not having to drive themselves.

Pony.ai has also established unmanned Robotaxi fleets in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The company has begun commercial fee-based services in these cities. The business has completed approximately 29 million kilometers of autonomous road testing. This includes 2.5 million kilometers with safety workers onboard and 600,000 kilometers in fully unmanned driving tests.

James Peng, co-founder and CEO of Pony.ai, said that the launch of the service in Shenzhen is a significant milestone for the company and the industry. “We are proud to be the first company to offer paid unmanned Robotaxi services in China’s first-tier cities. This demonstrates our leading technology and operational capabilities in the field of autonomous driving. We hope to bring more convenience and joy to the residents of Shenzhen and other cities with our Robotaxi services,” he said.
