News, 4 April 2025
Pony.ai Europe has clearance from Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works for testing Level 4 autonomous driving. Pony.ai earlier had established its European research and testing hub in Luxembourg in September 2024, as part of its strategic expansion into the European market. This milestone followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Luxembourg government in March 2024. It has also partnered with Emile Weber, Luxembourg’s mobility provider, to develop autonomous vehicle solutions
Dr. James Peng, co-founder and CEO of Pony.ai, expressed pride in being one of the first companies granted a testing permit in Luxembourg. He emphasized the goal of making Luxembourg a premier hub for autonomous mobility in Europe, further supported by a partnership with Emile Weber, a well-respected local transportation provider.
With the new permit, Pony.ai will work with Emile Weber on practical road testing, leveraging their expertise in public transit and tourism to seamlessly incorporate self-driving technology into Luxembourg’s transport network.
Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, highlighted that the permit represents a significant step towards the future of mobility, recognizing the transformative potential of autonomous driving. The government is dedicated to aiding companies like Pony.ai in their technological advancements and initiatives aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency in mobility.
In March 2024, Pony.ai formalized a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Luxembourg to promote the growth of autonomous mobility in the country. This partnership intends to build a local support framework to improve operational capabilities and foster the adoption of self-driving technology.
