200 EV Green Charger Stations Installed across Dubai

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced the completion of the second phase of its ‘Green Charger’ initiative, which included the installation of an additional 100 EV Green Charger stations across Dubai. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 20th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2018) in Dubai.

With the completion of the project, the total number of charging stations in Dubai has doubled from 100 to 200. The initiative contributes to DEWA’s efforts to encourage environmentally-friendly electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and to support sustainable modes of transport in Dubai. The EV Green Charger Initiative was launched by DEWA in 2015 in support of the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make the Emirate the smartest and happiest city in the world.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, and Founder and Chairman of WETEX, said: “WETEX is an ideal opportunity for us to announce our latest achievements and given its global position as one of the world’s largest energy, water, environment and technology events, over the past two decades. Through this unique platform, we are pleased to double the EV Green Charger stations from 100 to 200. This is in continuation of our efforts to support the Smart Dubai initiative, which aims to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world, ensuring a bright future for all Dubai residents by strengthening the foundations of environmental sustainability. It also supports the achievement of the UAE Vision 2021 and the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart, integrated and sustainable city with clean, healthy and sustainable environmental elements.”

DEWA has strengthened its cooperation with leading real estate developers in Dubai such as Meraas, Nakheel and Majid Al Futtaim Group by installing EV Green Chargers at their leading projects and shopping malls such as the Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta, La Mer, The Outlet Village, City Walk and a number of other featured locations in Palm Jumeirah.

“We have also installed charging stations at Dubai World Trade Centre, DIFC and Dubai Airport Free Zone. These sites are strategically important as they reflect Dubai’s leading position, to the participants of international conferences and exhibitions held in Dubai,” Al Tayer added.

“DEWA is currently working on the implementation of the Dubai Green Mobility initiative to promote the use of electric and hybrid vehicles. This supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 for Dubai to have the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050. Our efforts in installing additional EV Green Charger stations throughout Dubai complements the work of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. The incentives announced by the Council will encourage individuals and community members to use electric vehicles and sustainable modes of transportation,” Al Tayer said.

“As part of these incentives, DEWA’s registered users can charge their vehicles at the EV Green Charger stations free of cost. This incentive will last until the end of 2019 and will be exclusive to public charging stations and does not include home charging stations. In line with the Smart Dubai initiative, DEWA provides free registration for the EV Green Charger service through its smart app on IOS and Android platforms and its website. These smart channels also provide information on the latest EV Green Charger station locations, which are constantly updated to ensure the delivery of best services for customers,” Al Tayer noted.

“The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy is working to increase the percentage of electric and hybrid cars in Dubai. It has issued directive number 1 of year 2016 to set a target for the government. Therefore, at least 10% of all newly-purchased cars will be electric or hybrid from 2016 to 2020. The proportion of electric and hybrid cars will rise to 2% by 2020, and 10% by 2030,” Al Tayer stated.
