Coal India deploys private 5G network, uses it for vehicle tracking and more

Date: October 30, 2023. — The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) has implemented one of India’s first private 5G network in the coal mining sector. CMPDI showcased the private 5G network at recently held India Mobile Congress 2023. It has been implemented for Coal India subsidiary Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) at their Amlohri open cast project (OCP).

CMPDI presented live 5G use cases of 5G-enabled drones, artificial intelligence-powered cameras, vehicle tracking system (VTS), and mission-critical voice and video communications. The demonstrations was held live at Amlohri Open Cast Project and shown at India Mobile Congress 2023.

The 5G network ensures seamless operations and real-time data transmission across vast mine areas. It optimizes vehicle performance and safety through continuous monitoring. It also improves worker safety and asset security. Additionally, it enhances environmental monitoring, all of which result in efficient safety and coal production.
