Dear Reader,

For most of us residing in Delhi NCR, the month of Oct-Nov-Dec is season of air pollution, which at times leads to restriction of road transport vehicles movement and limited construction work etc. Globally, road transport contribute 16% of the total man made CO2, and there was discussion again on the need to phase out ICE (fossil fuel based vehicle) at UN COP28 climate summit in Dubai and replace them with EVs. But, electric vehicle alone cannot bring any significant reduction in carbon emission. As per reports- “With the power generation mix in China, lifecycle emissions of a BEV are about 39 tonnes of CO2e versus almost 85 tonnes for an ICE vehicle. In US its 42 tonnes of CO2 across its life.” The report further mentions, “As renewable sources replace coal and gas-fired generation, emissions related to the operation of BEVs could drop by 86%.” Makes a case for push for renewable energy, with a consideration for developing country like ours which needs time beyond 2050 to achieve net-zero emissions.

Last week, Govt of India (MoRTH) took a significant step to ensure medical assistance for road accident victim in ‘Golden Hour’, through its cashless treatment for road user including pedestrians. Hopefully this will reduce loss of life due to road accidents.

CiSTUP at IISc and BMTC are jointly working on pilot project to study the driver’s response to road condition specific to India. Perhaps involving an industry player from ‘ADAS/Driver Assistance System’ could have helped in quicker localising of ADAS product suitable for Indian condition.

CarDekho, primarily an automotive content aggregator helping buyer in car purchase decision, seems to have been awe-struck by this globally trillion dollar shared mobility (India- US$87.83bn in 2023) industry. Buying majority stakes in Revv has to be matched with solid business model which can help build a sustainable business in this space.

Govt of Bihar released its EV policy. More than the tax/registration/permit benefit to early buyer it gives a legal status to setting up of EV charging in public parking, residential apartment, office complex etc.

Best wishes,
