Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Volvo Car Group announced their plans to enhance infotainment systems in upcoming fully electric cars under the Volvo and Polestar brands with 3rd Generation Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms. Using Qualcomm Technologies’ innovations in automotive technologies, Qualcomm Technologies, Volvo Car Group and Google have developed a long-term roadmap to bring added value to Volvo customers while enabling a fast, highly responsive, and compelling user experience. Through efforts with Google, the infotainment systems in the Polestar 3 SUV and Volvo Cars’ upcoming fully electric SUV will be powered by next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms and its advanced suite of wireless technologies to support advanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. The Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms will help Volvo provide a new and improved user experience to its customers.
Volvo Car Group expects to launch cars featuring next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms later this year.
Through the relationship, Volvo Car Group and Qualcomm Technologies have optimized and aligned the software development pipeline to enable a product with improved performance: 2.5 times faster overall system speed, 5 to 10 times faster graphics rendering, and 2.5 times faster audio digital signal processing. With Google’s Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS), the Polestar 3 and Volvo Cars’ upcoming fully electric SUV will feature: hands-free help from Google Assistant and precise navigation with Google Maps, as well as a broad ecosystem of automotive applications and services on Google Play. Future improvements will be rolled out as over-the-air updates.
As a key component of the Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™ – a comprehensive set of cloud-connected platforms that individually or collectively digitize the numerous systems inside any automobile – the Snapdragon Digital Cockpit Platforms are designed to help carmakers utilize advanced displays, audio, computing, and connectivity to redefine infotainment. Open and scalable, these technologies are engineered for automakers to customize the in-car experience to the needs of customers and stay connected to customers after purchase to provide updates and additional features on demand.
For Volvo Cars, the transition towards becoming a fully electric car company and a leader in the premium electric car segment by 2030 means more than simply offering pure electric cars – it also includes offering seamless connectivity, industry-leading safety standards, advanced autonomous drive and the best possible user experience. To support the company’s ambitions, Volvo Cars is teaming up with global technology leaders where it makes sense. Together with Qualcomm Technologies and Google, Volvo Cars enables an industry-leading video, audio and connectivity performance in its next generation of fully electric cars.
“Volvo Cars is a company that believes in working with technology leaders like Qualcomm Technologies and Google to provide the best experience to our customers,” said Henrik Green, chief product officer, Volvo Cars. “With Qualcomm’s technology in our forthcoming fully electric SUV, we are confident our infotainment system will reach the next level.”
