Tata Elxsi to introduce autonomous vehicle technology to India’s infrastructure

Date: June 27, 2023

In a significant development for the country’s transportation sector, Tata Elxsi has announced its ambitious plans to bring autonomous vehicle technology to India’s infrastructure. This initiative aims to revolutionize the way people commute and enhance overall road safety and efficiency.

Tata Elxsi has long been recognized for its expertise in various technology domains, including automotive engineering and software development. Leveraging its extensive experience, the company intends to collaborate with government agencies, research institutions, and industry stakeholders to create an ecosystem conducive to the adoption and implementation of autonomous vehicle technology.

The introduction of autonomous vehicles to India’s infrastructure holds immense potential in addressing various transportation challenges faced by the nation. With the increasing population and urbanization, traffic congestion, road accidents, and pollution have become critical issues. Autonomous vehicles have the potential to tackle these problems by improving traffic flow, reducing human error, and optimizing energy consumption.

Tata Elxsi’s initiative includes research and development efforts to build advanced autonomous vehicle platforms tailored to Indian road conditions and traffic patterns. The company will focus on creating robust sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms, and data analytics systems that enable vehicles to navigate safely and efficiently in complex urban environments.

According to Dr. Gopinath Selvaraj, Practise Head of the Transportation Business Unit at Tata Elxsi, the intelligence operator assistance system (IOAS), particularly in the context of the 3D surround view, is “gaining traction in India.” He continued by saying that this technology offers a 360-degree view of the landscape and obstructions, enabling cars to move around more simply and safely thanks to sensors attached to the bottom of vehicles that deliver alerts about impediments beneath them. This increases safety and efficiency because drivers no longer need to exit their vehicles to check what is blocking their path.

In addition to technology development, Tata Elxsi aims to collaborate with automakers, transportation authorities, and infrastructure providers to establish necessary regulatory frameworks, safety standards, and communication protocols. These partnerships will foster the seamless integration of autonomous vehicles into India’s transportation infrastructure and ensure a smooth transition towards a smarter, more sustainable mobility ecosystem.

Until 2026, autonomous off-highway equipment is anticipated to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.7%, according to a firm estimate. Due to this need for operator support, OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers are creating reliable solutions with a variety of features and functions. The demand for electric off-highway vehicles has grown as a result of their decreased maintenance requirements, improved dependability, and absence of exhaust pollutants. However, as computing needs and architectural complexity increase, solutions that strike a compromise between performance and cost-effectiveness will be needed.
