Telangana to establish 3000 EV charging stations by 2025

Telematics Wire in a discussion with Shri Y. Sathish Reddy, Chairman, TSREDCO, explores the vision for increasing the footprint of electric vehicles in Telangana.

Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd. (TSREDCO) is a government agency, responsible for promoting and developing renewable energy sources. Its mission is to accelerate the adoption of solar, wind, biomass, and hydropower to meet Telangana’s energy needs through- promotion of renewable energy, project development and capacity building.

TW: What is the vision of TSREDCO for electric mobility in Telangana?

YSR: TSREDCO’s vision for electric mobility in Telangana is to establish an affordable and accessible charging infrastructure that enables clean and sustainable transportation. Our primary objectives are to ensure affordability and accessibility, making electric vehicles a viable choice for every citizen across the state.

TW: What is the role of TSREDCO in setting up EV charging stations? How many charging stations will Telangana have in the coming 2-3 years?

YSR: TSREDCO, as the state’s nodal agency for development of EV charging infrastructure in Telangana, is playing a pivotal role. Our comprehensive plan includes establishing a total of 3,000 electric vehicle charging stations in Telangana by 2025. Work on this plan is already in progress and we aim to meet the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure.

Furthermore, within the vibrant city of Hyderabad, TSREDCO has taken a proactive stance by establishing 150 EV charging stations to date. This achievement showcases our commitment to creating an EV-friendly ecosystem within urban centers. With more in the pipeline, TSREDCO is dedicated to further expanding the charging network to ensure convenient access for EV users.

TW: How has been the response to your PPP model for setting up EV charging stations?

YSR: The response to our PPP model for EV charging stations has been remarkable. Telangana marked a significant milestone by inaugurating India’s first PPP model EV charging station at Yadadri. The collaboration between Jagan Mohan Reddy and TSREDCO has garnered positive feedback, and we are witnessing a surge in inquiries from various entities interested in adopting the PPP model. To further expand this initiative, we are soon inviting expressions of interest for 614 locations from individuals interested in setting up charging stations under the PPP model. In the near future, a substantial share of charging stations will operate under this collaborative approach.

TW: Is there any plan/effort for building an ecosystem with solar energy, energy storage system and EV charging stations?

YSR: Absolutely, TSREDCO is actively working on creating a holistic ecosystem that integrates solar energy, energy storage systems, and EV charging stations. This synergy aims to optimize renewable energy utilization and enhance the overall sustainability of electric mobility in Telangana.

TW: Are there any plans for ‘used EV batteries’ in the Energy Storage System?

YSR: Yes, we are planning to repurpose ‘used EV batteries’ within the Energy Storage System. These batteries can serve as valuable components for energy storage, contributing to grid stability and minimizing waste.

TW: Will TSREDCO also consider recycling EV batteries at some point of time?

YSR: TSREDCO is exploring the possibility of recycling EV batteries in line with our commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.

TW: What according to you are the challenges in growth of EV in Telangana and in general across the country?

YSR: The growth of EVs faces challenges such as range anxiety, initial high costs, and lack of widespread charging infrastructure. To bridge these gaps, Telangana, under the leadership of Chief Minister KCR, has taken a pioneering step by establishing government-owned charging infrastructure. This ensures that consumers have access to charging facilities and paves the way for increased EV adoption.

TW: By 2030, what is the EV ownership and charging infrastructure you visualize for Telangana?

YSR: By 2030, we envision a significant increase in EV ownership across Telangana, accompanied by a robust charging infrastructure. Our ongoing plan to establish 3,000 EV charging stations by 2025 will contribute to this vision. These stations will be strategically placed, with urban areas having charging stations every 3 km and highway stations every 25 km.
