CATL and Yutong unveil 15-year battery for EVs

Date: April 02, 2024 Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) and Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co Ltd (Yutong), a Chinese manufacturer of commercial vehicles, particularly known for electric buses, have collaborated to introduce a battery technology for electric commercial vehicles. This battery has a lifespan of up to 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers (932,000 miles), exceeding the capabilities of current EV batteries.

This innovation aims to initially benefit Yutong’s electric buses, light trucks, and heavy trucks, enhancing the economics of electric commercial transportation. Yutong claims the battery demonstrates durability, with minimal degradation in the first 1,000 charging cycles, ensuring reliable energy output for extended periods.

This collaboration between a battery company and a bus manufacturer represents progress in electric mobility. Moreover, the improved lifespan and reliability of this new battery technology aim to enhance the appeal of electric trucks and buses for businesses, facilitating a greener future in commercial transportation.

Yutong will integrate this long-life battery into their upcoming electric vehicles, while also offering a 10-year lifespan battery option for diverse customer needs. This strategic partnership between CATL and Yutong positions them at the forefront of electric commercial vehicle development, promoting sustainability and economic efficiency within the transportation sector.
