Xiaomi unveils three high-speed EV models

Date: November 17, 2023. — Xiaomi has unveiled its SU7 series electric vehicle (EV). The SU7 series consists of three models: the SU7, the SU7 Max, and SU7 Lidar. The SU7 Lidar features a lidar sensor for autonomous driving. The SU7 series is expected to launch in February 2024. Prices for the series will range from 249,900 yuan ($38,800) to 399,900 yuan ($62,000).

The SU7 series is an electric sedan with a panoramic glass roof that seats five people. A self-developed electric motor and batteries from CATL and BYD power the vehicle. Additionally, the vehicle has an 800 V system with 260 kW of electricity. With a single charge, the SU7 series can travel up to 600 kilometers at a top speed of 265 km/h.

As part of its diversification strategy, Xiaomi entered the EV market. This move was in response to the declining demand for smartphones both domestically and internationally. In March 2021, Xiaomi revealed its plans to become electric and established a business to manage the project with a capital of 10 billion yuan ($1.55 billion). Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, is in charge of the subsidiary, Xiaomi EV, Inc. Moreover, he claims that the EV project is the “final major entrepreneurial project of his life.”

Xiaomi’s SU7 series is less expensive than Tesla’s Model S sedan. To improve its EV capabilities, Xiaomi has also bought Deepmotion, an autonomous driving startup, in August 2021. Xiaomi plans to debut the SU7 series at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024.
