K-DISC leads consortium to manufacture lithium battery for EV

Date: September 4, 2023. — A group of firms from Kerala led by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy Council (K-DISC) are manufacturing their own lithium-titanate or lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries for use in electric vehicles.

The lithium battery, developed by a team of local researchers and engineers, promises to offer enhanced performance, longer lifespan, and increased efficiency compared to conventional batteries.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, utilized LTO supplied by Travancore Titanium Products to make the batteries’ electrodes. The power electronic devices utilized in the battery will then be incorporated as the finishing touch by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

People expect the new lithium battery to tackle one of the key challenges the EV industry faces: the limited range and charging time. The 2.3-volt, 20-amp-hour battery provides quick charging capabilities. The battery has the potential to offer longer driving ranges and quicker charging capabilities. This could significantly boost the adoption of EVs not only in Kerala but also in other parts of India.

The introduction of Kerala’s own lithium battery is to further bolster these efforts. It will make EVs more accessible and attractive to consumers. Moreover, it also create new opportunities for local manufacturers. It will contribute to the growth of the clean energy sector in the state.

The battery’s componentry imported from China. We looked at the possibility of producing batteries utilizing the lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) made by Travancore Titanium Products, according to Ashok Kumar, a consultant with K-DISC’s Electric Vehicle Division. He stated that after making a few adjustments, the battery would be prepared for mass manufacturing.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the development of the indigenous lithium battery is just the first step. Kerala aims to become a leader in the EV industry. Moreover, the government plans to collaborate with various stakeholders, including automakers and research institutions. Thier goal is to further advance EV technology and establish a robust EV ecosystem.

The unveiling of Kerala’s own lithium battery has garnered attention not only within the state but also across the country. It signifies a significant milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable transportation. It reaffirms Kerala’s position as a pioneer in clean energy solutions.

The launch of this indigenous lithium battery is to inspire other states and industries to invest in research and development. This will foster innovation and contributing to the overall growth of the EV sector in India.
